Crossing Guard Phyllis Karpola Honored for 34 Years of Service
Posted on Tuesday September 08, 2020
A legendary figure was recognized at the Mokena Village Board's August 24 meeting as retiring Crossing Guard Phyllis Karpola was honored with a proclamation by Mayor Frank Fleischer, Clerk Melissa Martini, and the Board of Trustees for her 34 years of service to the Mokena community.

Ms. Karpola, who began her professional duties with the Village in 1986, dedicated her career to the safety and well-being of Mokena children, fulfilling her crossing guard duties loyally and faithfully at busy intersections near the community’s schools.  A trusted and dependable friend to many schoolchildren and parents over the years, she is never known to have called in to work sick.

In 2019, Ms. Karpola was selected to be Grand Marshal of the Mokena Chamber of Commerce’s Fourth of July Parade, and was also honored that year with a Mokena Public School District Galaxy Award.

Ms. Karpola was featured September 4 on the WGN evening news, and boards honoring her are currently on display along Wolf Road near the intersections where she served so devotedly for so many years.
